Weather Fine In WB

Hello Everyone:
The weather looks wet in Wilkes-Barre for tomorrow morning, but there is a chance of sleet and freezing rain early- turning to all rain. Then later----------- a possibility of snow. Check this blog for any changes in the AM. I know we have interns traveling from the Reading area, Chambersburg, the north and other areas...... Traveling for most should be fine, but take your time. If it takes a little longer to get the Wilkes, we will wait to get started. Please use your judgement as your safety comes first. Please be prepared to share a brief synopsis of your research project, as well as a log experience.

Here's the SAS Conference I spoke about Sunday...

PDE's SAS Institute, Bridging Research and Practice, is scheduled for December 5, 2010, through December 8, 2010. The Institute will highlight the Standards Aligned System as a vehicle to enrich curriculum and provide resources for effective classroom delivery. Districts, intermediate units and higher education teacher preparation institutions are invited to attend this four-day event that promises to provide information on current topics, an opportunity to collaborate with colleagues from across the state, and participation in breakout sessions linking SAS to everyday practice. A range of sessions from curriculum mapping to Curriculum Framework to SAS teacher tools will give educators the opportunity to enjoy hands-on experiences and delve more deeply into available resources. All sessions will focus on three overarching Institute goals:

* Use SAS to enhance current practice and improve student achievement

* Use SAS as a resource to facilitate and guide implementation of the National Common Core Standards

* Analyze how the Keystone Exams will aid students in becoming college and career ready

Keynote speakers Jay McTighe and Charlotte Danielson will share their expertise as related to curriculum and teaching while panel discussions will provide in-depth awareness of Common Core Standards and Keystone Exams. This year's Institute will offer small group sessions to both debrief on general session topics as well as delve more deeply into SAS and available resources to enhance professional practice.

Section III

----Hope everyone is having a great week! I am in the midst of reading your papers and will be providing feedback soon. As always, email me or call if you have questions.

Section III. Methods and Procedures

Section III describes, in detail, how the study of the problem will be conducted. The research approach and design is clearly identified and justified in this section. This section is typically divided into subsections, and may contain the following, depending upon the approach used: research approach and design, sample and population, data collection and instruments (including scoring methods), procedures (when, where, and how data will be collected), limitations of the research, data analysis methods and procedures, validity and reliability issues as applicable to the method, and ethical considerations.

Critical questions to consider include: Where will the project take place? What population (students, faculty, community) will be used? What instruments (tests, surveys, student records) will be used for data collection? How will the data be analyzed? What tasks will be used in the implementation of the project? How will collaboration with administrator(s) take place?

“STRAIGHT TALK FOR PARENTS!”

PRESS RELEASE EVENT DATE: MARCH 15, 2011

“STRAIGHT TALK FOR PARENTS!”
How to reduce the rise in medication and substance abuse

What have Matthew McConaughey, Ben Affleck, Britney Spears, and Mel Gibson all had in common besides fame and fortune? A drug or alcohol problem. Unfortunately, many of our children are following their examples and getting involved with dangerous substances at increasingly earlier ages. The average age of a child’s first alcoholic drink is now 8 and a teenager’s first experiment with marijuana is occurring at age 13.
In a 2008 survey of youth by the Partnership for a Drug-Free America, 40% of American teens reported that they believed prescription medications were safer to use than illicit drugs. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported in 2007 that 45% of high school students, regardless of gender, were drinking alcohol, many to the point of regular bingeing.
So what is a parent, grandparent, or other caregiver to do?
Drug Free Pennsylvania, one of the Commonwealth’s premier non-profit organizations in educating adults about substance abuse, will be holding a free seminar for parents in partnership with the BLaST Intermediate Unit #17 (IU 17) on Tuesday, March 15, 2011 at 7:00 p.m. The seminar will be held in the Tioga Room at the Intermediate Unit, which is located at 2400 Reach Road, Williamsport, PA. Not only will participants learn about the kinds of substances now making their way into schools, communities and homes, but those in attendance will be taught strategies to help young people avoid these substances. So whether parents have preschoolers or new college students, there will be information for all. We are pleased that the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency is providing funding support for this effort.
There is a need to pre-register for this seminar as seating is limited. Please register through Drug Free Pennsylvania’s website at http://www.drugfreepa.org/seminar/iu17.asp. For further information, please contact Dr. Glenn Zehner, Educational Programs Director. He can be reached at zehner@drugfreepa.org. Additional contact information is provided below.
