Dagget

National Conference Saturday 9 am
Bill Dagget in the house
Opened up with a show of hands of how many people think there is a problem in education
Then asked people to raise their hands if they felt they were the problem. Lol who the heck would raise their hand.
Our schools are not failing -the graduation rate is up,
We are getting better but we all have to admit we need to get better. No more name game!
Schools are improving!
Lesson number one
The teachers and administrators are not working any harder in any states but they are working differently.
Lessons learned inform emerging learning
@Create a culture. We do not have a culture that supports change but often looks and says change is a bad thing
@Instruction not structure- does not matter what schedule etc what matters is the instruction (don't change my 1990 lesson plan- I have it laminated lol) Those same teachers say this too shall pass
@Essential vs.Nice to know this nation has never met a standard it did not like, hmmmmm. But common core will take us there
@Teacher evaluation is the 600 pound bear in the room
Why do we need to change? It's not because schools are failing.
Technology is changing....how many people have googles something in the last 24 hours
Wolf Ram Alpha -check it out
Dagget went on and showed a clip then he asked if anyone had googles wolf ram alpha? He said if our students do that many teachers say they are cheating.lol what a great point.
Lexile framework study for reading
Talked about levels of knowledge and the four quadrants
Level A is low level knowledge STATE TESTS
Rigor and relevance framework
Relevance makes rigor possible!
National essential skills study
eliminate department chair people with interdisciplinary chair people
What do all kids need for math. They need to be proficient in BASIC MATHEMATICS
There are are actually about 1/3 of standards not tested
The questions on tests are going to go from quadrant a to d
THE GORILLA in the room
Teacher evaluation TAKE CONTROL or BE CONTROLLED
The tests measue and challenge the top 1/3 of the students

Rubrics are needed to stretch students
Kids have become passive
They are not engaged
His list of Guiding Principles are what we want our kids to be - academia is not on it...

The media has slipped up
Families have slipped up
we need to make sure we don't
Bottom line- make a three year transition plan
I am asking for the PowerPoint.

Opening Assembly

Principal's National conference Opening assembly Friday 4 pm
Disclosure. These are noted from my IPAD so pardon slight errors. I will edit later...
Lots of people standing. As as administrator this reminds me to remind you to over prepare. They also did not have any power points for anyone due to a computer issue. They said they will send them. So far the Esther has been yucky and the conference has one direction to go. Hmmmm. You know what I mean. But remember we have to showcase the positives- celebrate small victories. I did pick up some good stuff and meet some great people. Dagget is tomorrow morning. Yippie!
Anyway here we go...Dr Gerry Tirozzi
We need to take back our profession
Breaking Ranks new book is out. All about change models k-12
It must be comprehensive k-12. No longer divided like previous books
Hey we have a new logo NASSP leading schools
school leadership is a collaborative effort www.nassp.org
Wow. Talked about how NCLB has screwed up the principal's position. When a school does not perform he or she is replaced and the new person gets funds the oldnone never got,
Also was not an advocate of charter schools. We can't hold lotteries for our kidsnto go. We educate all of them
Reauthorization of ESEA....we need to be part of that
Critics. Address the effects of poverty on our students and the funding disparities. To the education guros, policy makers, legislators! Education is not going to be saved Waiting for superman. The movie was terrible by the way. (Crazy but they played it on the flight from Chicago to San Francisco)

Finally....keynote is going on at 4:57
Dr. Diane Ravitch
Where school reform goes wrong!
How about Rhode Island school yesterday. Fired everyone but they can reapply for their jobs...
Will our nation's schools survive the efforts to reform them?
Considering eliminating tenure, thinking kidsnare better off sitting in front of a computer or in a charter school
The Corporate Reform Movement. But it is not really a business model
They know nothing about what goes on in the classroom. They do nottalk about out of core subjects and the arts
Gates foundation has bought education but are they doing everything right. Now they are spending billions in search for the bad teachers
They care about test scores, not children
They force us to spend weeks upon weeks ontest prep prior to tests
They don't care about the arts
They think you can tell who the weak teachers are based on the tests (have to say in some cases that is true)
But she is right that it destroys trust in the school culture.
NCLB. Measure and Punish, they set an impossible goal and it's not a goal it's a mandate...
One third of our schools currently failing but that will increase as we get closer to 2014
NAPE achievement proficiency levels are very high. Very hard exams
We are nowhere close to our targets of NCLB after nine years. Countless dollars spent on tests andtest prep
Corporate reform will say you support the status quo if you say you don't agree with NCLB
Were schools closing all over before NCLB
and......the lights are going out in Detroit
Corporate thinks public schools are like chain antlers and if they do not make a profit close em
If there are still fires you don,t close down the fire department
Finland has invested in teachers and support is strong. They do not have standardized tests and have a full boat of civics, arts, health etc. And Finland is kicking!
TEACHERS AND PARENTS hate NCLB
Narrowed curriculum focusing on reading and math skills, not really even science
Creativity, imagination dying...
Love of learning is dying due to NCLB
PISA results mentioned by Obama and he said we have to raise those test scores. What Obama did not realize is that the scores are higher now than they were in the 70s 80s and 90s
No one seems to realize that poverty is the root of the problem
When children come to school hungry and bearing the burdens of poverty they are doomed for positive learning
Poverty rate is 20 percent and rising
Stanford study. Results 83 percent the same or worse than public schools
On NAPE in 2003 there was no difference in charter and public school scores
Now Vallue added assessment is being pushed by Gates Foundation to be used or funds will not be available
Value added assessment has inaccuracies, students change and teachers change
Parents across America- check that out
WOW SHE IS 15 MINUTES OVER AND PEOPLE ARE LEAVING
I am gonna stay.....she is picking on the voucher program
Scores of voucher kiddos are doing poorly so is choice working
Schools don't improve by closing them they die....arnie Duncan closes opens warns. No results in Chicago!
NY City is actually closing schools that opened five years ago and the kids just keep getting pushed around
We can't continue to demoralize teachers we need to encourage them
Race to the top changesnthe promise made in 1965 to the students who need it most. RTTP rewards grant writers. We are trying ton educate all students not just the ones in the race. Lol okay now she is way over time. As principals we know about being concise- right?
I'm outta here. Pa state meeting at the Marriot next.

Shouldn't every student have an IEP. All students have a portfolio. Every teacher is made aware of all student learning styles. "I need you to teach me about the civil war but I need you to act it out for me to learn it"
KNOW ALL YOUR STUDENTS AS INDIVIDUALS
Learning must be seen as developmental and celebrate small victories

Change as Whitaker notes is procedural, cultural or structural.
First step: Identify the change and determine exactly why it is needed.
- Form a leadership team and ask them to prioritize what changes are needed most. Also determine how to go about implementing actions to make the change, small or big.

Procedural change is low level or technical alteration.
Structural change is more complex and involves a change in management or organization.
In structural change it is important for the group to agree on the most important change on the list. A plan for presentation has to be decided upon. Casual or formal presentation?
Also figure out how to elicit constructive responses only.
Cultural change involves the specific manner in which schools do things.
In changing culture you change the schools soul and spirit. This level of change requires support from many levels of players.

Feb 26
Leading is about learning
the lead learner is the learning leader
Find the innovators
Professional development is best when you amend the ones that want to go- not the ones YOU want to go. The ones that want to go come back and share

Robert Kennedy quote there are those

Digital leadership
What does the principal need to know?
What do you need to be able to do?
How do you work with the IT experts?
Key points
-Engagement
-digital learning environment 1 to 1 technology for every student
-24/7 is a necessity
Does technology make teachers better? It will not make a bad teacher good but a good teacher berthed and it IS the way Kidd learn

The journey from mediocre to great
The importance of good data
core beliefs- focus on the right things
Try to let teachers know they are lucky to be a teacher in the school
This is the place to be!

Leadership style: creating a climate that drives performance
HIRE the right people
An effective leaders changes style 10 to 12 times per day. You can't sit and say okay I am going to this meeting and I will use this style...
You need to constantly turn things on and off
Cowboys captains loners
Why change fails?
Lack of urgency
No focus
Absence of commitment by teachers
Need
Collab leadership
Personalization
Curriculum and instruction

Change secrets
1Focus and vision. Focus is power. Gps is a good visual because it tells you where you are when you turn it on
2Data. Every teacher. How can you differentiate lessons if you do not know where the kiddie reading level is
3Start small. Don't run to the faculty and tell them we are going to do this
Get quick wins
Get the book Tipping Point
4work the willing find them
5be obsessed with implementation and implement with fidelity

Technology is a tool not a means to an end

Need distributed leadership
We can't expect teachers to work differently if we are not willing to work differently
In the process circle for guiding change you need to monitor not just assume it is happening
